Having yellow teeth is one those embarrassing situations that serious affect the self-esteem of those who suffer from it. The good news is there are ways of dealing with it. Here are the causes of yellow teeth and methods of treatment to deal with this situation.
The Causes Of Yellow Teeth
Yellow teeth can be brought about by the following factors:
- Natural occurrence: for some people, yellow teeth are a natural occurrence due to a low mineralized enamel layer. Teeth are made up of an enamel and dentin layer. The enamel layer is what makes your teeth look white, where as the dentin layer is yellow in color. Therefore, teeth will appear naturally yellow if the enamel layer is very thin.
- Aging process: you may have noticed this, or not, but teeth start to turn yellow as we grow older. It’s just a fact of life. This is mainly because the enamel layer, found on teeth, will generally tend to wear out over time. Another factor is the effects of staining agents on teeth, which tend to seep into to teeth, giving them a yellowish tinge.
- Oral hygiene: the oral hygiene of an individual has a lot to do with the health of their teeth. Poor oral hygiene often leads to yellow teeth.
- Beverages and other habits: the beverages we consume can sometimes contain chromogenic properties, which can lead to tooth discoloration. Beverages like coffee, tea, soda, etc will often lead to yellow teeth. Habits like smoking and chewing tobacco will leave a nicotine deposit on your teeth, giving them a yellowish stain.
The Treatment For Yellow Teeth
There are numerous approaches on how to remedy the “yellowing” of teeth. Some of them can be very simple, where as other can be a bit more complicated. They include:
- Brushing and flossing your teeth, twice a day.
- Brushing your teeth, after consuming color imparting beverages like soda, tea, coffee, etc.
- The use of whitening toothpaste and chewing sugarless whitening gum.
- The use of paint on bleach or whitening strips.
- The use of dental veneers
